WALL TWP., N.J. -- Malcolm
Campbell, Jr., of Eatontown, won his first career INEX Legends Cars feature
Saturday night and Derek Hopkinson, of Toms River, his second Sunday afternoon
here at Wall Township Speedway.
Campbell ousted polesitter
White Kowalczyk at Saturday's Scott Motor Coach Sales Night INEX Legends
Cars feature's start and would lead all 21 of 25 scheduled laps. The Brice
NAPA Kickin' Motorsports No. 5 600 Racing-Yamaha pilot was 1.736 sec. ahead
of Dennis "D.J." Macri when WTS officials, citing time constraints, called
the race four laps short. "I can't thank the Kickin' crew and sponsors enough,"
said Campbell.
"I've been with the team
for a season and a half." Both Campbell and father, team owner Malcolm, Sr.,
denied that the No. 5 will be repainted to resemble the late Sir Malcolm
Campbell's Bluebird Land Speed Record cars. They said that their's and the
late 1930s British speedster's names are coincidental.
A Kickin team member did
show the Campbell's teammate Robert Geibel., Jr. and former driver Jim Tomaino
that the late Red Bank native Wally Campbell had won his last of four WTS
NASCAR WAAS modified features Sept. 1, 1952. "The Tattooed Trentonian" was
1951 NASCAR Modified Champion, four times American Stock Car Racing Association
titlist and a winner in AAA Sprint Cars before his death at Salem, Ind.,
July 17, 1954.
Although the actual racing
time was five minutes, 31 seconds, nine cautions for assorted spins and crashes
stretched race conduct over 28 minutes. The mishaps put out Mike Stull, Luke
Marzano, Rob Vivona, Phil Fortuna, Tom Catanzaro, Dan Roslin and Francis
Cottrell, among eight nonfinishers.
Campbell's victory cheered
Matt, Jeff and Beth Smith, of Wall. Matt, 6, usually appears in the grandstand
dressed like twice NASCAR Cup champion Tony Stewart and uses his set of starters
flags. B. Smith said they started coming to WTS, a NASCAR Home Track, after
watching Cup races on television.
Campbell, B. Roslin and
Ron Poley split the three eight-lap qualifying heats. Hopkinson took a different
approach to winning his second WSS Calabreeze Pools Legends feature. The
P&H Racing No. 17 600 Racing-Yamaha driver came from 11th place to third
while Karl Heisler ousted initial leader Jason Forrester on lap four. Hopkinson
dived inside of Heisler on lap 10 to take the lead for good on the flat
one-fifth-mile inner oval.
Hopkinson, who split the
10-lap heats with newcomer Jimmy Havelow, held off Heisler the remaining
10 laps. Joey Mattis, Danielle Ostrander and Havelow rounded out the top
five of 12 finishers. Ryan Truex came from the rear of the 14 starters to
take sixth place.
WSS drew Max Zachem, of
Preston, Conn. Zachem, aboard the Foxwoods No. 20 600 Racing- Yamaha, started
13th and finished 11th. He intends to compete for Young Lions honors at the
Lowes Motor Speedway at Charlotte this fall.
