WALL TWP., N.J. -- Billy
Weichert, of Chatham Borough, N.J., ended his four-year quest to add his
name on Wall Township Speedway's Modified feature winners roster here on
Scott Motor Coach Sales Fan Appreciation Night Saturday. Weichert used his
pole position to lead all 40 laps of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
modified main. The Boardwick Racing Engines No. 11 Troyer-Chevrolet driver
withstood pressure from front row mate Jason Treat the whole way. NASCAR
WAAS modified regular Tommy Farrell III, of Shrewsbury, also celebrated his
first RMP Modified Affordable Division feature start - and victory - while
substituting for Rich Hallgring. Dan Collamer, of Waretown, held off Nick
Shaw by .019 sec. - or a fender- length - to win his third Value Towing Factory
Stock Feature. Ron Frees, of Brick, gave his street stock victory as a night-late
gift to newlywed Tara. Kevin Eyres, of Colts Neck, ousted rookie David Green
to win his seventh sportsman main of the year. Daniel Roslin took his third
INEX Legends win of the season.
Weichert started his night
by winning his 10 lap heat. Handicappers, however, placed Treat between his
pole position and fellow heat winner Justin Gumley, who started third among
the 23 car field. The WTS headliner started on a rough note when contenders
Kevin Flockhart, Chas Okerson, Alan Creveling, Richie Knell and Jason Wiggett
were felled by opening lap mishaps. A third complete restart was called,
allowing Weichert to head off Treat. The attrition continued into lap 29,
when John Kopf was the 12th and last driver to park his car. Ron Buck, in
the No. 0, and Tommy Farrell III, in the No. 54, were among the non finishers.
Weichert bested Treat by 1.984 sec. after 40 laps. Gumley, Mike Carpenter
and Shaun Carrig rounded out the top five of 11 finishers. "We came here
four years ago not knowing anything about oval track racing,' said a jubilient
Weichert. "We started out in the trucks and switched to the mods when the
trucks stopped running here last year."
Farrell was called to
start the RMP MAD main last after Rich hallgring suffered a hand injury during
his eight-lap heat. The Woodys Roadside Tavern No. 0 Troyer RMP Chevy pilot
tore through the 20-car field until he ousted Scott Riggleman mid-race. Kevin
Eyres, Kevin Davidson and newcomer Mike Skarboroski rounded out the top five
of 16 finishers. "These MAD cars are something," said Farrell in WTS victory
lane. "They're the wave of the future." Robert Geibel and Rob Williams split
the heats.
Collamer won his third
Value Towing Factory Stock feature of the year after poleman Bill Connolly
and challenger Joe Constandi collided on lap 18. The last two laps were anything
but a cruise for Collamer, however, since Nick Shaw was charging for his
career first feature. Collamer kept his Cannon Signs No. 42 1982 Oldsmobile
Cutlass ahead of Shaw by .019 sec. Richard Petey, gary Pein and current points
leader Vern McLaughlin III rounded out the top five of 25 starters. Connolly,
who split the heats with Doug Bates, Jr., salvaged 20th place. "I knew someone
was coming but I didn't know who,' said Collamer of Shaw. "I have to thank
all my sponsors, family and crew for making this win possible." Steve Weber
started and finished Felix Ciattarelli's No. 2005 car in 30th place after
a lap. WTS officials have suspended Ciattarelli indefinitely as the result
of his Sept. 1 post-checkered flag crash with McLaughlin.
Frees came from eighth
starting place to outlast poleman Harry Schaefer and outrun former class
champ Rich Mongeau. The DependabiliTEES/Boardwick Racing Engines No. 43 Chevy
Monte Carlo/Camaro driver had split the heats with Dave Bragg but handicappers
placed Bragg alongside Schaefer. Schaefer got the drop on Bragg at the start
and initially repelled former WTS trucker Jerry Stanzione but soon had his
mirrors full of Mongeau and Frees. Frees passed Mongeau on lap 10, before
Schaefer nosed into the second turn guardrail two laps later. Frees and Mongeau
ran nose to tail the remaining laps despite enduring cautions for title contender
John McCormack's crash and Charlie DiGiantomasso's technical problem. Frees
headed off Mongeau by .398 sec. after 25 laps with Ray Minieri, Rob Hyer
and Shannon Mongeau rounding out the top five of 13 finishers. "Anytime you're
racing against Rich Mongeau, you're in a real race," said Frees. "We had
some engine problems at the start of the night but we were using a Frank
Boardwick engine for the first time. I thank my wife, Tara - who I married
Friday - plus all of my family, team and sponsors. We'll keep getting more
points on Rich and who knows about the championship."
Eyres began his advance
from fifth starting spot while poleman Bobby Richards, Jr. and Green squared
off for the sportsman main's opening lap lead. Richards got spun in the second
turn, however, handing the point to Green. Richards, who went a lap down
in the mishap, twice blocked Green from lapping him before track officials
black-flagged him to the pits on lap seven. Although Green was in the lead
for his first career sportsman main triumph, he struggled against class king
Chas Okerson, second- generation driver Charlie Kremer III, Eyres and Elliott
Wohl. Eyres emerged with second place by lap six and ousted him after a lap
21 restart. The AVIS/Top Cuts Lawn Care Rondeau-Chevy No. 21 pilot went on
to a 1.180 sec. lead on Green after 25 laps. "I hope the fans enjoyed the
close racing we put on tonight,' said Eyres, whose eighth WTS feature win
came in the RMP MAD division. "This division is coming back." Okerson, Kremer
and Wohl rounded out the top five of nine finishers. Ron Holmes and Alan
Camp bowed by lap 18.
Roslin added another WTS
INEX Legends Cars feature victory to his total during Scott Motor Coach Sales
Fan Appreciation Night. The Calabreeze Pools No. 03 driver came from 15th
place among 24 starters to win the 25 lap divisional headliner. Roslin began
advancing while local Legends Cars/Bandolero dealer John Hugate took initial
control. Hugate, who owns and operates RTS Performance from Ewing, held off
Francis Cottrell despite Bruce Roslin, Steve Stull and Mike Alcaro having
problems by lap five. Cottrell took command from Hugate, who would fade to
12th place at the finish, by lap 10. Whitey Kowalczyk and Value Towing Factory
Stock vet Dan Collamer - in for Robert Geibel - challenged before they either
spun or encountered mechanical woes. Daniel Roslin ousted Cottrell on a lap
13 single file restart and went on to a .364 sec. victory. Mike Stull held
off former White Lake (N.Y.) Speedway regular Todd McCollum for third. Former
class champion Bryan Gardella and Mark Tischler rounded out the top six of
18 finishers. Former Value Towing Factory Stock winner Tischler was driving
his ex-Stull Racing blue No. 0 to sixth; Matt Marring, who usually drives
the No. 02, was driving the Alcaro-owned green No. 0. Tischler started driving
the green 0 before obtaining the blue 0 which he recently won a feature with.
WTS officials are asking one or the other team to change numbers before Sept.
22's USG Sheetrock Night. Alcaro and Robert Geibel split the 10-lap
heats -- but had their night turn for the worst. Alcaro, who had a running
order disagreement with track officials on lap 19, was sent to the pits and
was placed 21st. Geibel's Kickin Motorsports team then called in Collamer
to be substitute driver in the No. 15 -- who finished 17th.
