YOSIHARA EDGES MILLEN IN WALL SPEEDWAY SCCA FORMULA DRIFT
Third Place Finisher Foust Leads National Points
by Walter Elliott

WALL TWP., N.J. -- Daijiro Yoshihara, of Tokyo, beat second generation driver Rhys Millen to win the SCCA Formula Drift National Championship presented by Circuit City at Wall Township Speedway Saturday night. Yoshihara put his No. 009 Rockstar Energy Drink/Nitto Nissan Silvia ahead of Millen's No. 002 Red Bull Pontiac Solstice GXP after two laps on the four-turn, .75-mile drift course. Yoshihara's first victory of the season vaults him from fourth place to second in the SCCA F.Drift Castrol SYNTEC Power Cup points standings with the Oct. 13 finale at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway remaining.

Yoshihara endured four rounds of eliminations that winnowed Saturday's top 16 qualifiers to his match against Pikes Peak Hillclimb specialist Millen. Millen, of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and Yoshihara made the morning's top 20 qualifiers and Friday's top 32. Millen's second place earned him fourth and last mathematical place to vie for the drivers championship.

Current points leader Tanner Foust, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., still leads the championship after six of seven scheduled rounds. Foust, who won four races with his No. 034 AEM/Memphis Car Audio Nissan 350Z, placed third by winning the consolation round. Chris Forsberg, who considers WTS his home track, is ranked third in points despite an early exit. The Doylestown, Pa. driver and his No. 015 Maxxis Tire/NOS Energy Drink Nissan 350Z Roadster advanced from "The Sweet 16" but lost to Walnut Creek, Calif.'s Tyler McQuarrie and his No. 005 Porsche 993 GT2 Turbo in "The Elite Eight" round.

The four-year-old SCCA Formula Drift championship challenges drivers' car control. Ford Mustangs, Dodge Chargers, Toyota Corollas and Mazdas are also among drivers' cars of choice on the circuit.

WTS resumes its stock car program with Fan Appreciation Night Saturday. Fans can meet their favorite drivers and cars on the banked paved one-third- mile oval before 6:30 p.m.

The Wall Sunday Series, including the Calabreeze Pools Legends Cars and Van Winkle Auto Supply NAPA Bandoleros on the one- fifth-mile inner oval, is to resume noon Sunday.
