HAZLET'S RAY EVERNHAM, NASCAR STARS AT WALL AUGUST 4TH
by Walter Elliott
Ray Evernham's Racing For A Reason Saturday, August 4th

WALL TWP., N.J. -- Ray Evernham will have something of a homecoming when the former Hazlet resident joins NASCAR star drivers Bill Elliott, Elliott Sadler, Kasey Kahne and Erin Crocker on Wall Township Speedway's Racing for a Reason Night Saturday. Evernham, nationally known as a three-time NASCAR Nextel Cup champion crew chief, is to compete in the headlining 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series modified race. The former modified driver has been slated to drive the No. 66 StatusGreen Troyer-Chevrolet normally wheeled by Jimmy Blewett, of Howell. Evernham won seven Whelen All-American Series modified mains here from 1982-91 and 10 sportsman/pro stock/modern stock features 1976-77 before trading his helmet for a crew chief's hat. Evernham, who helped revive the International Race of Champions series at nearby Tinton Falls in 1983, became crew chief for Hendrick Motorsports' Jeff Gordon in 1992. Evernham and Gordon together won 47 Nextel Cup races and the 1995 and 1997-98 titles before the former left to form Evernham Motorsports in 1999.

Evernham Motorsports became the cornerstone of Dodge's 2001 re-entry into Nextel Cup. Drivers Bill Elliott, Kasey Kahne and Jeremy Mayfield have since added seven Cup races to Evernham's victory count, including the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Pocono Int'l Raceway's Pennsylvania 500. 1985 Cup champ Elliott, Sadler, Kahne and Evernham Development driver Erin Crocker are to compete in RMP Modified Affordable Division cars for a 20-lap match race. MAD cars are modified stock cars using sealed GM V8 engines from RMP, of Pennsauken. They are to hold a first-come, first-serve grandstand autograph session beforehand.

Evernham, Crocker, Elliott, Kahne and Sadler are promoting Evernham Motorsports Racing for a Reason Foundation. Racing for a Reason is raising awareness of Leukemia and Lymphoma in the wake of son Ray J. Evernham's illness. Proceeds of the $40 per adult admission are to go to the foundation.

Racing for a Reason Night includes frequently visiting American Three Quarter Midget Racing Association plus the Value Towing Factory Stocks, Street Stocks and INEX Legends Cars. Spectator Gates are to open at 3 p.m. sharp.

The Wall Sunday Series, featuring the Calabreeze Pools Legends and Van Wickle Auto Supply NAPA Bandoleros, is to resume noon Sunday. Kart, kart-based and scaled car racing is to be held on Wall's one-fifth-mile inner oval with free grandstand admission.

A 20-minute rain shower Saturday helped give most of Wall Township Speedway's racers extra time to prepare for Racing for a Reason Night. The rain, which flooded the banked, paved one-third-mile oval's infield, also washed out the next day's Wall Sunday Series round. The intended USG Sheetrock Night July 28th is to be rescheduled for a later Saturday night this season.

Congratulations to Vernon McLaughlin III, of Whitehouse Station for his North East Enduro Teams Series victory Sunday at Lehighton, Pa.'s Mahoning Valley Speedway. The current Wall Value Towing Factory Stock points leader won the 100-lap race for four-cylinder cars. McLaughlin's teammate Richard Petey finished third in the eight/six-cylinder edition.
